Deadwood by Pete Dexter

Kimberly is SO excited about this novel. If a Western doesn’t sound like your thing—you must join us! Set in the South Dakota of the 1870s, the book takes us into new territory (literally) where colorful, warm prose brings to life Calamity Jane, Wild Bill Hickok, and a whole slew of complex, memorable people.

The novel is not short (365 pages), and there is a decent amount of violence (caveat emptor), but WOW is it worth your time. As an origin story, this sojourn in the Wild West is a fascinating way to think about America. Mostly, though, the book is just really rich and absorbing.

*BONUS SEMINAR: The television adaptation of Deadwood is what actually hooked Kimberly. There is lots of scholarship on the Shakespearean language used in the series. It’s SO good. Readers are welcome to watch a selected episode that we will discuss in a free extra meeting on April 25. It’s going to be so cool. Join us!

There are several ticket options that include all Winter/Spring Seminars and books, book with purchase (either shipped to home or picked up at Kepler’s Books), or Seminar only. The book should be read prior to the meeting date.
