A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley

If you missed this novel in 1991, wow are you in for a treat. A juicy and nimble rewriting of King Lear (which we will have just explored in a two-part Literary Intensive), the novel tells the engrossing yet relatable story of three daughters and their wealthy father on a family farm in Iowa. This book is full of both small and very large dramas told in prose that is straightforward and compelling.

A Thousand Acres very deservedly won the Pulitzer and for very good reason. It’s the rare book that combines heady Shakespearean tragedy with your favorite thoroughly American family saga. Kimberly can’t wait to dig in.

There are several ticket options that include all Winter/Spring Seminars and books, book with purchase (either shipped to home or picked up at Kepler’s Books), or Seminar only. The book should be read prior to the meeting date.
