The Testament of Mary by Colm Tóibín
This very slim novel is perfect for December both in its brevity and its fascinating subject matter. Tóibín boldly offers us the story of Jesus’s last week, as told from Mary’s perspective. Even if you’re agnostic (like me) and you’re no biblical scholar (I’m certainly not one), you will be sucked right in to Tóibín’s reworking and detailing of this (relatively) familiar tale.
The writing is straight gorgeous and even minor characters will stay with you long after you finish. If you can believe it, the ending is a complete shocker! Whether you love the holiday season or hate it, this quick book will hugely deepen your appreciation of one of the most important stories of western civilization. Give yourself the holiday gift of experiencing this masterpiece while learning to read a little more profoundly.
A copy of The Testament of Mary is included in the price of the Seminar and should be picked up at Kepler's (and read) prior to the meeting date.
