Peggy Orenstein with Donnovan Somera Yisrael

  • Kepler's Books 1010 El Camino Real` Menlo Park United States (map)

***DATE CHANGE: This event is on Wednesday, 2/12 at Kepler's Books****

In 2016 Angie Coiro and Peggy Orenstein had a comprehensive and enlightening conversation on Girls & Sex; now Orenstein is focusing on the boys. Join Orenstein and Donnovan Somera Yisrael for a candid evening on the sexual lives of young men, with an introduction by Angie Coiro for This Is Now. Orenstein— drawing on comprehensive interviews with young men, psychologists, academics, and experts in the field— shares how young men understand and negotiate the new rules of physical and emotional intimacy.

With Girls & Sex, Orenstein launched a nationwide conversation about pleasure and agency in young women's sex lives. Then Orenstein realized boys are subject to the same cultural forces as girls—distorted media images and stereotypes of female sexiness and toxic masculinity—which equally affect how they navigate sexual and emotional relationships.

Orenstein and Yisrael will dissect so-called locker room talk; how the word “hilarious” robs boys of empathy; pornography as the new sex education; boys’ understanding of hookup culture and consent; and their experience as both victims and perpetrators of sexual violence.

Yisrael is Senior Health Educator, Mental Health and Well Being at Stanford's Vaden Health Center and believes in the power of emotional intelligence and positive psychology, using both to help add meaning and happiness to his students' lives.

This is sure to be a provocative and paradigm-shifting evening that offers a much-needed vision of how boys can truly move forward as better men.
